What does finger length say about athletic ability? In a BBC project “Secrets of the Sexes” John T. Manning risked his reputation by participating in an experiment with six athletes: all 5000 meters specialists… the outcome is simply astonishing!
Professor John T. Manning explains:
“… What I should be able to do is look at the differences between the ring finger and index finger, and on that basis rank these runners: first, second, third, fourth and so on. In theory that should work.”
Comment voice explains:
“In practice we’re providing professor Manning with photocopies of the athletes hands. And in return he’s risking his reputation by providing us with the results of a race that has yet to be run.”
You can now learn more about the fascinating ‘2D:4D digit ratio’: take a look at the outcome of this rather remarkable experiment – you will likely enjoy it, and probably… you will remember the outcome easily!!! (starting at 2:05 of the youtube video)

New research from Germany has pointed out that men with long ring fingers (low 2D:4D ratio) may more easily get into trouble – by driving too fast, overtaking on dangerous roads, or parking illegally. For, men with long ring fingers reported more traffic violations!
Earlier research pointed out that men with long ring fingers show more: agression, assertiveness, and they take more financial risks!
|New ring finger research from Germany:
Researchers at the University of Mainz recruited 77 male drivers at an average age of 38. Each volunteer had their left hand scanned to measure the difference in length between the ring and index fingers.
They then had to provide details of all driving offences within the previous five years. Just over a third of the drivers reported having penalty points on their licences, ranging from one to 20, for offences ranging from speeding to drink driving.
The results, published in the journal Accident Analysis and Prevention, showed men with longer ring fingers were more likely to have offended.
In a report on their findings the researchers said: ‘A longer ring finger than index finger was related to more traffic violations. Hormone exposure in the womb might increase traffic violations in later life.’
By the way, earlier reports pointed out that Jamaicans are known for having the long ring finger, and young sprinters with long ring fingers appear to have more sprint talent (indicated by faster sprints) … some anecdotal evidence is provided by Usain Bolt, the world’s fastest man – who has the long ring finger … and had a car-crash accident earlier this year!!

The 2008 olympics in Beijing pointed out that Jamaican sprinter Usain Bold is the fastest man on sprint ever! And last sunday he set another new world record 100m sprint at the Athletics World Championships 2009 Berlin.
How come that Jamaican sprinters run so fast?
|SPRINT RESEARCH (2009)
Earlier this year research on the hands of sprinters pointed out that a long ring finger (low 2D:4D ratio) relates to a fast sprint – new photos indicate: both male sprinters AND female sprinters from Jamaica have the long ring finger!

How come that Jamaican sprinters run so fast? John Manning’s new finger research points out that a long ring finger (low 2D:4D ratio) relates to a fast sprint – other research indicates: Jamaicans have the longest ring finger!
|NEW SPRINT RESEARCH (2009)
British researchers have found that finger length might be a key factor in Bold’s world records at both the 100m and 200m. For, Jamaicans are known for having a low ‘2D:4D digit ratio’.
The British ‘finger professor’ John T. Manning has recently presented new research which indicates that men who have a relatively long ring finger run faster! The research was done on 241 young male sprinters at a sports talent-spotting competition in Qatar.
JAMAICANS HAVE THE LONG RING FINGER!
Manning reported in his book ‘Digit Ratio’ (2002) that the average 2D:4D digit ratio in Jamaican people is among the lowest of the various populations in the world (a finding which was confirmed in a 2004 study). This might implicate that Usain Bolt’s digit ratio is actually not very low at all … in the perspective of the fact that he is a Jamaican man! The photo below illustrates that Asafa Powell, former world record holder & the second most famous sprinter from Jamaica, has the long ring finger as well!
While Leonid Stadnyk from Ukraïne (unofficially the largest man on earth) has the world’s LARGEST hand, Usain Bolt is the fastest man ever and so he is: the World’s fastest hand!
