Why Jamaican sprinters run fast: Usain Bolt & Asafa Powell have the long ring finger!

‘The World’s Fastest Hand’ – research points out: long ring finger relates to a fast sprint!

The 2008 olympics in Beijing pointed out that Jamaican sprinter Usain Bold has the world’s FASTEST hand… ever!

How come that Jamaican sprinters run so fast? John Manning’s new finger research points out that a long ring finger (low 2D:4D ratio) relates to a fast sprint – other research indicates: Jamaicans have the longest ring finger!

NEW SPRINT RESEARCH (2009)

British researchers have found that finger length might be a key factor in Bold’s world records at both the 100m and 200m. For, Jamaicans are known for having a low ‘2D:4D digit ratio’.

The British ‘finger professor’ John T. Manning has recently presented new research which indicates that men who have a relatively long ring finger run faster! The research was done on 241 young male sprinters at a sports talent-spotting competition in Qatar.

JAMAICANS HAVE THE LONG RING FINGER!

Manning reported in his book ‘Digit Ratio’ (2002) that the average 2D:4D digit ratio in Jamaican people is among the lowest of the various populations in the world (a finding which was confirmed in a 2004 study). This might implicate that Usain Bolt’s digit ratio is actually not very low at all … in the perspective of the fact that he is a Jamaican man! The photo below illustrates that Asafa Powell, former world record holder & the second most famous sprinter from Jamaica, has the long ring finger as well!

While Leonid Stadnyk from Ukraïne (unofficially the largest man on earth) has the world’s LARGEST hand, Usain Bolt is the fastest man ever and so he is: the World’s fastest hand!

Sprinters from Jamaica have the long ring finger.

    Great article! I’m loving your website;

I don’t believe this theory about the finger. Jamaican kids start short sprinting from an early age by playing different games. Mostly girls play different skipping(jump rope) games, which plays a very important part of developing the legs and heart rate. Doing short sprints in some of these games help develop the legs to become faster, esepecially, when run on grass.
The other major thing is the correct training for these athletes because incorrect instructions can ruin a young athlete career.
Example doing repetition in training is extremely good, but how it is done is of great importance. Doing 5 repetitions in quick succession at the athlete maximum speed for that event could ruin that athlete. Most Jamaican track coaches are extremely classy and they are able to put a very good program that is very efficient and productive.
About a decade ago a University in Boston did a comparison of haelth results, based on the food eaten between Caribbean and Americans. Result showed the Caribbean folks were more healthier. These are the key things that have been helping these kids.

      Hello Mike Danvers,

Sounds like everything you said is true. But beyond the ‘nurture’ there is ‘nature’: there are various clues in professor John T. Manning’s finger research (digit ratio) which point out that people can have a natural ability to become an out-performer in certain behavior.

By the way, last year a Canadian research pointed out that long distance runners who have the low ‘2D:4D digit ratio’ run faster:

And now Manning has found that the theory is also suitable for sprinters:

On top of that … at least 2 studies (and I have found more evidence!) have indicated that Jamaicans have lower ‘2D:4D’ digit ratios compared to other populations. Combining all these research results point to one (provocative) conclusion: Jamaicans have a natural ability to run faster than other populations!!! (And I think it would be interesting to take a look at the performances of Jamaicans at the longer running distances!)
